News Coverage Highlights Marine Technology’s Role in Protecting North Atlantic Right Whales

A recent Press of Atlantic City article, “New technologies can better prevent whale collisions than speed limits, boatbuilder says,” highlights how new marine technologies can help better protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale while supporting safe access to the water.
The article features Viking Yacht Company’s work to advance tools that improve real-time awareness on the water, including systems that use thermal imaging, automatic detection, AIS, video analytics, and connected communications to help identify whales, vessels, and other potential hazards. These tools show how innovation can support conservation by giving boaters better information to avoid collisions before they happen.
The coverage follows recent participation by NMMA and industry members in Capitol Hill Ocean Week and Boating Technology Day in Atlantic City, where leaders emphasized that marine conservation and responsible recreation can move forward together.

As NOAA reviews the 2008 North Atlantic Right Whale Vessel Strike Reduction Rule, NMMA continues to support a modern, technology-driven approach that protects endangered species, improves boater safety, and recognizes the technological progress made by the recreational marine industry.
