Last week, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), in partnership with Candlewood East Marina, hosted Connecticut state lawmakers on Candlewood Lake for an on-water wakesurfing demonstration, providing policymakers with a firsthand look at wakesurfing and the recreational boating industry’s commitment to education, innovation, and responsible use of shared waterways.

During the event, lawmakers met with industry representatives and experienced wakesurfing firsthand while discussing the importance of public education, consistent and common-sense regulation then preservation of access to Connecticut’s waterways. The demonstration also highlighted the critical role marine dealers play in educating new boat owners before they ever leave the dock.

State Sen. Eric Berthel (R-Watertown), whose district includes a portion of Candlewood Lake, stated:

“Candlewood Lake is not only one of Connecticut’s greatest recreational resources, it’s also a major economic driver in our state. Today’s on-water wakesurfing demonstration reinforced that recreation on Candlewood, and all our lakes, begins with education on how to behave safely and responsibly while on the water. Retailers like Candlewood East Marina reflect this value, and thoroughly educate new boat owners before they ever put the boat in the water. This type of education can be passed down to younger generations of boat owners for safe and courteous boating in the state. Responsible boating protects the experience for all who enjoy Candlewood Lake while helping to preserve this beautiful natural resource for years to come.”

Recreational boating is an important economic driver in Connecticut, generating $3.6 billion in annual economic impact, supporting 13,223 jobs and 623 businesses, with nearly 88,400 registered boats across the state. Annual sales of new boats, engines, trailers, and marine accessories contribute an additional $322.6 million to Connecticut’s economy.
