The National Marine Manufacturers Association joins the recreational boating community in mourning the passing of longtime industry leader and NMMA Hall of Fame member J. Robert “Bob” Long, who died July 15 at age 86.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Long helped shape the marine industry through his leadership, entrepreneurship, advocacy and commitment to developing the next generation of industry professionals. His career included leadership roles at Starcraft Marine, Crestliner and Wellcraft Marine, where he served as president for 17 years, as well as more than two decades as owner and CEO of JRL Ventures Inc./Marine Concepts.

Long was also deeply committed to advancing the broader recreational boating industry. He helped establish NMMA in 1979, served on its Board of Directors for six years and remained an active member and supporter of the association throughout his career. A dedicated industry advocate, he regularly traveled to Washington, D.C., supported the American Boating Congress and worked to educate policymakers and the public about the importance of recreational boating.

Long also championed innovation, engineering education and workforce development, working with schools and colleges to encourage students to pursue careers in the marine industry. In recognition of his leadership and service, he was inducted into the NMMA Hall of Fame in 2015.

“Bob’s leadership, vision and commitment helped strengthen both NMMA and the recreational boating industry,” said NMMA President and CEO Frank Hugelmeyer. “We are grateful for his decades of service and advocacy, and for the lasting impact he made on countless colleagues and industry professionals.” NMMA extends its deepest condolences to Long’s family, friends and colleagues.
