NMMA Welcomes Pro-Growth Policies Highlighted in State of the Union
Following President Trump’s State of the Union address, the recreational boating industry is encouraged by the administration’s continued focus on economic growth, American manufacturing and policies that support working families and small businesses.
As highlighted during the President’s remarks, the passage and implementation of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” marks an important step toward strengthening the nation’s economic foundation. For the recreational boating industry — a uniquely American sector where 95 percent of boats sold in the United States are made in the United States and 93 percent of boat builders are small businesses — pro-growth tax policy is essential to long-term success.
The law’s permanent extension of competitive corporate tax rates, protection of pass-through businesses, restoration of full and immediate R&D expensing, and enhanced investment incentives support the kind of stability that fuels consumer confidence and strengthens American competitiveness at home and abroad.
As Frank Hugelmeyer, President and CEO of NMMA, shared during the recent State of the Industry address at the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show (DBMIBS), the marine industry has navigated a complex environment in recent years. Inflationary pressures, elevated borrowing costs, and global trade uncertainty have influenced consumer behavior and business investment decisions. Yet through discipline, innovation and resilience, manufacturers and dealers have remained focused on long-term growth.
Recreational boating generates $230 billion in annual economic impact and supports more than 812,000 American jobs. Policies that promote economic certainty, competitive tax structures, and stable market conditions directly benefit workers, businesses and communities.
The President’s focus on strengthening American industry aligns with our industry’s core priorities:
- Keeping U.S. marine manufacturing globally competitive through a nuanced and strategic approach to trade policy.
- Driving innovation and marine technology with policies that recognize and encourage better research and evidence-based decision making along with closer collaboration between government and manufacturers.
- Improving and expanding recreation infrastructure through long-term investment in waterways, marinas, and public access points.
- Protecting and expanding boater access to public waters, ensuring that families can safely and responsibly enjoy America’s lakes, rivers, and coastal communities.
The coming year presents a significant opportunity. As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, there is renewed momentum to invest in America’s infrastructure and celebrate the outdoor experiences that connect families and communities. Reauthorization of the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, continued advancement of the Water Resources Development Act, and modernization of marine infrastructure will be critical to sustaining participation and economic growth.
As noted by Hugelmeyer at DBMIBS, an energized American consumer will energize the marine industry. Boating offers meaningful experiences, connection to family and friends and time in nature, which are qualities that remain deeply valued across the country. With sound economic policy, regulatory modernization, and strategic investment, the marine industry is well positioned to move forward with confidence.
NMMA appreciates the administration’s commitment to policies that strengthen American manufacturing and support small businesses. We look forward to continued collaboration with the White House and Congress to advance stable, pro-growth solutions that ensure the next chapter of American recreational boating is as strong and resilient as the last.
