Ken Hey Named 2026 Alan J. Freedman Memorial Leadership Award Recipient

NMMA today announced Ken Hey, founder of Sunstream, as the 2026 recipient of the Alan J. Freedman Memorial Leadership Award. The award recognizes individuals who’ve made outstanding contributions to the marine accessories industry through leadership, creativity and personal motivation. Hey was honored during the Miami Industry Breakfast held in conjunction with the Discover Boating® Miami International Boat Show® on Feb. 12.

Hey founded Sunstream in 1996 after inventing the world’s first freestanding hydraulic boat lift, a breakthrough that helped establish hydraulics as the industry standard. He went on to introduce the first hydraulic floating lift, the first automatic boat cover system, and smartphone-enabled marine controls, earning multiple NMMA Innovation Awards and repeated recognition from Boating Industry as a Top Products honoree. Hey’s work has broadened the role of marine infrastructure while helping marinas, waterfront properties and boaters modernize how they interact with the water.
A lifelong boater and licensed 100-ton U.S. Coast Guard captain, Hey brings firsthand understanding of consumer expectations to his work. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in mechanical engineering from Cornell University, an MBA from the University of Washington and previously spent a decade in the aerospace industry developing patented, fail-safe systems that remain in use today. That engineering foundation has translated into more than 20 marine-related patents aimed at making boating easier, accessible and more enjoyable.
In 2025, Hey introduced the Sunstream LiftBar, a first-of-its-kind boat lift that advances his “Dock of the Future” vision.
“Ken’s leadership and innovation have, raised the bar for performance and integration across his many products and patents geared at improving the boating experience,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, president and CEO of NMMA. “His work reflects the spirit of the Freedman Award and its focus on lasting industry impact.”
Hey currently serves on NMMA’s Marine Accessory and Components Division Board of Directors.
