Discover Boating, Progressive Insurance Public Service Announcements Make Waves with News Stations Nationwide

A television public service announcement (PSA) campaign from Discover Boating, in collaboration with Progressive Insurance, has been picked up by hundreds of television stations in top media markets across the country, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta.

Since launching last July, the PSAs, featuring the “See You Out Here” anthem spot as well as videos from the Boating Safety Basics series, have aired 24,000 times across 1,250 stations and 184 media markets. Most stations ran the spots dozens of times, delivering 128 million impressions.

  • The coverage secured equates to more than $7 million in donated media value (what it would cost to secure the same media “real estate” if the news coverage were paid advertising). This is well above the average value of PSAs in the market of between $2-$4 million.
  • Stations include national and regional networks such as New England Sports Networks, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, Heroes and Icons, Catchy Comedy and Grit, as well as local ABC, CBS and FOX affiliates and more.

A “Boating Safety Basics” video also aired on Connected TV (streaming platforms such as ROKU and Comcast) and delivered more than 877,000 views within four months. Top performing networks and channels included Disney, Hulu and ABC News. The video had an impressive view through rate (VTR) of 99.4% - higher than the industry average of 89% - suggesting the content was engaging viewers.

On the heels of this success, Discover Boating and Progressive are rolling out a new TV PSA campaign featuring fresh content from the Boating Safety Basics series as well as the “See You Out Here” Voices spot. This new campaign will run for the next 12 months.

Boating safety videos and campaign spots are available to industry stakeholders in the Discover Boating Industry Resource Center, powered by NMMA and MRAA. Download or embed the video content to share in your showroom, on your website, via your social network or in your next email campaign.
