NMMA Members Host Facility Visits with South Carolina State Legislators

Last week, Prospec Electronics and Groupe Beneteau held events in South Carolina with state legislators to discuss key issues facing the recreational boating industry. NMMA helped facilitate both visits and encourages all members to work with them on coordinating similar opportunities.

On Monday, July 16, Representative Lee Hewitt and Senator Stephen Goldfinch, both representing the Charleston area, toured Prospec Electronics’ world headquarters in Charleston. Prospec Electronics’ President David Sykes discussed with Rep. Hewitt and Sen. Goldfinch the effects of tariffs on his business and the importance of a robust workforce development effort at the state level.

Later in the week, Groupe Beneteau hosted Representative Roger Kirby, Representative Lukas Atkinson, and Senator Kent Williams at their plant in Marion. John Humler, Beneteau’s Plant Manager, raised similar concerns about the escalating trade war and worker shortage.

Last week’s tours are part of NMMA’s overall effort to reinvigorate the marine industry’s profile among South Carolina’s local elected officials. This is particularly timely in South Carolina as the state legislature is considering workforce development and vocational education measures.
