NMMA and members participate in Everglades Summit in DC

The Everglades Foundation recently hosted a 2-day Everglades Summit in Washington, DC. On April 24th-25th, leaders and interested groups from across the State of Florida and the country, met in Washington to strategize and support efforts regarding the Everglades. NMMA, and members including Maverick Boat Group, Yamaha Marine Group, and SeaDek Marine Products, participated in the Summit.

As part of the events, Maverick Boat Group President and Founder, Scott Deal, as pictured here, took part in a panel discussion regarding why the Everglades are vital to the economy in Florida. Other panel participants included Perk Perkins, the CEO of the Orvis Company, as well as representatives from the Florida Keys Fishing Guide Association, Pure Fishing Inc., and Florida Realtors.

A number of Members of Congress from Florida and across the country participated in the Summit.

Prior to the Summit, NMMA solicited members to support a letter to Congressional leaders for an authorization of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir in the upcoming 2018 Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). The EAA Reservoir plan was recently submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for their review. However, before the project can begin it must be reviewed by the Corps, approved, and then submitted to Congress for authorization. In order to avoid a 2-year or more bureaucratic delay, Congress needs to conditionally authorize the project as part of WRDA 2018.

NMMA is pleased to report that over forty members agreed to sign the letter. A final copy can be found here.

NMMA will continue to advocate for Everglades restoration and projects, and it will be an important topic of discussion during the upcoming American Boating Congress (ABC), May 9-11 in Washington, DC.

It’s still not too late to register to attend ABC. Note first-time attendees and young professionals (under 35) receive a discount. Click here to learn more and register.
