Cuba could eventually become a significant boating market. With 11 million residents, Cuba would rank 7th in population if it was a U.S. state. Many feel that Cuba has some of the best boating waters in the world, as it boasts 1400 miles of coastline, just like the Florida Keys. Cuba also has more than one hundred fresh water lakes suitable for boating. Add these lakes to the coastline and you’ll find that 95% of Cubans live within 5 miles of navigable boating waters.
The NMMA continues to closely monitor the changing policies pertaining to the normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba and seeks to ensure that the easing of travel restrictions are applied to recreational boating the same as they are to other industries.
During the two fact-finding trips conducted by the NMMA in 2014, the existing infrastructure was assessed and key contacts who will be of value to members were established. When the time is right, the NMMA will work to prepare the recreational boating industry for opportunities that may arise.
In the meantime, as an NMMA member, you are invited to join an informational session on “Cuba’s Nautical Heritage” presented by one of the foremost experts on the Cuban marine industry: Commodore Jose Diaz Escrich from the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Havana. Commodore’s presentation will be followed by an active question and answer session, during which the current market conditions and usage patterns for Cuba’s recreational boating industry will be discussed.
Space is limited and offered exclusively to NMMA members as part of the NMMA’s export development program.
