California Sportfishing League voices opposition to potential ban on fishing tackle made from lead, copper or zinc
Anger and opposition has grown quickly since the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (CDTSC) called for a study and likely ban of all fishing tackle made with any metal, but particularly lead, copper or zinc. These three metals make up the vast majority of tackle, from clasps and swivels to small and large weights. The California Sportfishing League (CSL), a leader of the opposition to the state’s proposed action, has found that CDTSC may not have followed state law in selecting fishing tackle for review. Before any chemical or product can be placed under scrutiny by this program, the CDTSC must conduct specific, in-state studies of the its possible impact. Officials presiding at public meetings on the ban said they have conducted no studies. Nearly 2,000 people have voiced opposition to the DCTSC’s plans via CSL’s website. NMMA is a founding member of the California Sportfishing League.
