2019 Statistical Abstract: Sales Trends and Trade Sections Available

While the NMMA continues to gather, analyze and report on the latest industry data from the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is continuing to release final 2019 data from the annual Statistical Abstract, free to members. The following sections have just been made available on NMMA.org: Powerboat Sales Trends; Cruiser, Watersport, Fishing Boat & Trailer Sales Trends; and Boat & Engine Exports and Imports.

Data from the sales trends reports show more than 200,000 new outboard, inboard, jet-propelled and sterndrive boats were sold in 2019, the second highest in twelve years, with growth in outboard cruisers (up 18%) inboard wake sport boats (up 6%), and personal watercraft (up 5%).

“While the pandemic has dampened the sales momentum we had heading into 2020, boating remains an in-demand outdoor recreation for consumers eyeing accessible, versatile ways to enjoy time with loved ones,” noted Vicky Yu, NMMA’s director of business intelligence. “With the retail price of a new aluminum boat package averaging $36,000 and new 3-passenger personal watercraft averaging $12,000, there’s opportunity for the industry to attract more participants as families look for responsible ways to distance and get on the water near home this summer.”

Data from the trade report shows exports of recreational boats and marine engines totaled $2.1 billion in 2019, up 6 percent from 2018, while imports were up 5 percent to a new high of $3.5 billion. Trends in global trade on recreational boats are available in the full report with breakouts by country and product categories.

NMMA members receive unlimited, complimentary access to the digital version of each section of the Statistical Abstract as they become available, in addition to the full compilation report, which will be released in August. NMMA’s Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract is the most comprehensive collection of industry data and a trusted source for marine business intelligence.

The release schedule for remaining sections of the 2019 Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract is:

  • June/July: Pre-owned Boat Market; Total Industry Sales by Category and State; and Total Boat Registrations
  • August: Full Report
