NMMA BOATING FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT DIVISION

International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) was formed in 1965 to bring together under one umbrella all national recreational marine industry organizations and to represent them at the international level.

Currently, ICOMIA has members in 23 countries, primarily in Europe and North America but also around the Pacific.

Among other things, ICOMIA:

  • provides a forum to consider issues of common concern, collect relevant data, and crystallize policy for dealing with the issues

  • promotes awareness of the recreational marine industry's needs and objectives, including the improvement of boating facilities and safety to heighten the perception of boating as a quality experience that is fun and available for all

  • maintains a close working relationship with international bodies, national governments and other regulatory authorities on behalf of its members

  • publishes its opinions and recommendations for international standards and codes of practice

  • promotes acceptance of recreational boating and associated facilities as being in harmony with a clean and attractive marine environment

One of several ICOMIA Working Committees is a Boating Facilities Committee—the IBFC. This group is made up of marina specialists from several countries. Collectively, they offer a worldwide perspective on the promotion and development of recreational boating facilities.

The IBFC serves as an international clearinghouse of information about planning, designing, financing, building, operating and maintaining boating facilities, from full service marinas to simple day use launching ramps. They not only collect and classify authoritative references but generate new information through a continuing international marina conference education series.
