INDIVIDUAL
    Requirements to Become MIC Certified
The "Uniting the Boating Industry for Growth" Task Forces and the MIC Board recognize the need to certify our front line personnel and management within dealerships or as individual marine professionals. Both groups believe that individual professional certification will encourage an investment in training, raise the level of customer sales, service and support, and create an easily identifiable pool of talent.

Currently, Individual Certification is available for the following specialties: Management, Sales and Technical. In order to be eligible to become MIC Certified, you must have been employed with the same organization for six (6) months.

Once you have become MIC Certified, the certification stays with you! If you change employers, it moves with you. However, the new employer must wait the mandatory six months before counting you toward "total number of MIC-Certified employees."

Management

Professional, capable and motivated General Managers, Sales Managers, Service Managers, Customer Service Managers and Department Heads are the cornerstone of our ability to improve the customerís ownership experience. Requirements for certification are:

  • Managers must document 40 hours of MIC-approved management training.
  • No more than 20 of the 40 hours may be in sales, product or technical training.
  • One-time completion of the Code of Conduct course and the Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility course (3 hours each).

Management courses may include, but are not limited to, service management, sales management, accounting, and budget forecasting, as well as general leadership and management. Membership in a dealer ìtwenty groupî may qualify if the program is MIC approved. The use of community colleges and courses such as Situational Leadership and Seven Habits of Highly Effective People are encouraged. The MIC board will credit time spent in any management course, which is registered and authorized to grant Continuing Educational Units (CEU) or Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours. Managers will be credited for the total time spent in the program (20 contact hours), but not the total CEUs (30 credits). CEU documentation must be submitted with your application.

When applying to become MIC Certified, it is possible that prior training (taken within the last 24 months) may count toward total required certification training hours. Courses must have been approved by the MIC Board.

Sales

A salesperson must document MIC-approved training in the following areas every two years:

  • 16 hours of Sales Technique Training

Sales training is defined as training in the selling process, art and skills used to develop relations with customers, and use of professional presentation, objection handling and prospecting practices.

  • 16 hours of Product Knowledge Training

Product training is defined as the nuts and bolts of the boat, engine, trailer or components the individual is selling. The training should help the salesperson explain the features and benefits of the product to customers and enable the salesperson to answer customer questions.

  • One-time completion of the Code of Conduct course and the Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility course (each three hours).

Technical

Technical Certification can be attained by pursuing one of the following technical service tracks:

Power Plant Certification

A service technician must obtain and/or maintain factory certification in a major product line (e.g., OMC, Mercury, MerCruiser, Yamaha, etc.) or attend 40 hours of MIC-approved engine training in the case of companies that do not factory certify technicians.

General Technician Certification

A service technician must complete a total of 40 hours of MIC-approved training that relates to marine maintenance and repair. Some examples of topics that could apply to this certification are:

  • Engine Repair
  • Propeller Repair
  • Accessory Repair
  • Electrical Systems
  • AC/Heating Systems Fiberglass Repair
  • Paint/Gel Repair

All technicians require one-time completion of the Code of Conduct course and the Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility course (3 hours each).

When applying to become MIC Certified, it is possible that prior training (taken within the last 24 months) may count toward total required certification training hours. Courses must have been approved by the MIC Board.
