Merchandise Preparation Requirements

UPC Labeling


Unless otherwise agreed upon, each smallest unit package must have a UPC label or a pressure sensitive label, showing the Vendor's product number, a bar code, and the bar code number in a conspicuous place. Each UPC label must also contain digits for manual legibility. CAUTION: Bar code labels must be scanable upon receipt by Customer.

Master Carton UPC

All cartons containing one (or more) identical items should have a (master carton) UPC label.

UPC Bar Code Standards

As outlined above, UPC bar code labels are required on each selling unit. Vendors must develop and apply UPC bar codes prior to shipping all goods.

UPC information for ALL new items purchased by Customer must be provided, upon request, by the Vendor for set-up at least seven days prior to initial receipt of the goods. Information that is required:

  1. The Number System Character (the first position in the 12 digit UPC code)
  2. Manufacturer Identification Number as assigned by the Uniform Code Council
  3. The 5 digit code for each Item Number
  4. The 12th digit which is the check digit and appears on the bar-code label
  5. Acceptable formats include the following:
    • UPC-A (Universal Pricing Code)
    • EAN 8 or 13 (European Article Number)
    • ISBN (International Standard Book Number)
    • UCC-128 (Uniform Code Council)
