Membership Divisions and Eligibility

Membership with NMMA is open to any business entity that qualifies for one of the Membership Classifications set forth below.  Please reference the unique requirements for each of the three manufacturing divisions and Associate member categories.
 
For manufacturers, membership fees are based on a Dues Schedule for North American annual sales in the marine industry. Associate service provider members pay an annual fee of $650 per year. 
 
NMMA membership is open to any business that meets the divisional requirements outlined below.
  • Boat Manufacturer Division (BMD)
  • Engine Manufacturer Division (EMD)
  • Accessory Manufacturer Division (AMD)
  • Associate Member

Boat Manufacturer Division (BMD) - a business entity that manufactures or imports boats.

NMMA Certification of boats and yachts is a requisite for membership within 12 months of joining NMMA. 

Participation with the Grow Boating Engine Assessment is a requirement of all BMD members.  The contributions help to fund the Discover Boating campaign, an integrated marketing strategy grounded in sound research, which generates awareness to the consumer and creates interest in the boating lifestyle. 

 
BMD applicants outside North America must have a certificate of authority from at least one state of the United States showing it is legally authorized to conduct business in that state, thereby submitting to its jurisdiction. Without such proof, application for NMMA membership will not be considered by any boat manufacturing firm outside North America.

Engine Manufacturer Division (EMD) - a business entity that manufactures marine propulsion engines.

EMD applicants outside North America must have a certificate of authority from at least one state of the United States showing it is legally authorized to conduct business in that state, thereby submitting to its jurisdiction. Without such proof, application for NMMA membership will not be considered by any propulsion manufacturing firm outside North America.

Accessory Manufacturer Division (AMD) - a business entity that manufactures marine equipment and materials used in the construction or upgrade of a boat or that produces a general marine-related product used to enhance the boating experience.

AMD applicants outside North America must have a certificate of authority from at least one state of the United States showing it is legally authorized to conduct business in that state, thereby submitting to its jurisdiction. Without such proof, application for NMMA membership will not be considered by any accessory manufacturing firm outside North America.

Service Provider Membership Categories: 

  • Associate Member: a business entity that provides a service to the marine industry and/or the general boating consumer (ex: marinas, publications, insurance, repairs, MTA, etc.)
  • Dealer / Retailer Member: must be an authorized dealer/retailer of a new boat brand or engine manufactured by an NMMA member.
  • Distributor Member: must be an authorized distributor of products manufactured by at least FIVE different NMMA accessory manufacturing members; or an authorized distributor of marine engines produced by an NMMA engine manufacturing member.

Exclusive North American Importer Membership Consideration

A business entity that is the exclusive importer for North America for a manufacturer of marine components or accessories, boats or engines is eligible for Membership as a “manufacturer” member in the appropriate division described above. Qualified import product must be manufactured outside North America and documentation from the manufacturer must be provided indicating an exclusive importing relationship.
