DEALERSHIP
    Requirements to Become MIC Certified
The requirements for dealer certification grow out of the "Uniting the Boating Industry for Growth" Action Plan. Dealers must demonstrate the ability to meet the following criteria to become a Marine Industry Certified Dealership. Overall dealership requirements will be based on the number of staff employed by the dealership. Dealerships with less than five (5) retail locations may combine all applications onto one application. If they have five (5) or more retail locations, they must submit an application for each location.

1. The dealership must have a minimum of one Marine Industry Certified person in the three specialty certifications:
  • Management
  • Sales
  • Technical
Dealerships with less than six (6) employees can have the MIC-Certified Management, Sales and Technical employee be the same person.

2. Twenty-five percent of total full-time employees must complete an authorized Code of Conduct course.

3. Appropriate employees involved in the delivery process must complete the Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility course.

If you are MIC Certified prior to January 1, 2001, this course is waived. After this date, this course is a requirement.

4. The dealership must have a factory-certified technician for each engine franchise that it sells.

For example, if the dealership sells both OMC and Yamaha outboards, then the dealership must have a factory-certified technician for each line. This requirement could be met by having one technician who is factory certified in both products.

5. Training the staff on improving their job skills is essential to increasing customer satisfaction.

Total training hours will be based on a percentage of the total staff in each specialty area. To determine the number of training hours required, please review the Individual Requirements and use the formula and category ratio factors listed below.

Formula

When applying to become MIC Certified, it is possible that prior training (taken within the least 24 months) may count toward total required certification training hours. Courses must have been approved by the Marine Industry Certification Board.

EXAMPLE 1: MANAGEMENT

In the management area, at least one manager must meet the individual training requirements and must complete the Code of Conduct and Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility courses.

Example: In a dealership with two managers - a General Manager and a Sales Manager (one of whom is required to be MIC Certified) - the dealership must have 40 total hours of   MIC-approved management training. All managers with customer contact must have completed the Code of Conduct and Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility courses.

Here is how you determine your required management training hours.

In this example, management (staff of two) would need to have a total of 40 hours of MIC-approved training. Since one manager is required to be MIC Certified in Management, those training hours to become MIC Certified can also be used toward overall dealership required training hours.

EXAMPLE 2: SALES

In the sales area, training must be completed in two areas - sales and product knowledge - and any professional with customer contact must attend the Code of Conduct and Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibilitycourses.

Example: In a dealership with three salespeople (one of whom is required to be MIC Certified) the dealership must have 32 total hours of sales training and 36 total hours of product knowledge training. Also, all three sales professionals must have attended the Code of Conduct and Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility courses.

Here is how you determine your required sales training hours.

In this example, sales (staff of three) would need to have a total of 32 hours of MIC-approved training in Sales and 36 hours of MIC-approved training in product knowledge. Since one salesperson is required to be MIC Certified in Sales, those training hours to become MIC Certified can also be used toward overall dealership required training hours.

EXAMPLE 3: TECHNICAL

In the technical service area, the minimum requirement is that at least one technician must be factory certified in each engine line the dealership represents (or have attended 40 hours of MIC-approved technical training) and all technicians with primary customer contact must complete the Code of Conduct and Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility courses. In addition to the initial certification, technicians will be required to complete 16 hours of training every two years. This training may include recertification classes.

Example: In a dealership with two technicians (one of whom is factory certified in an engine line) the dealership must have 60 total hours of technical service training. This requirement could be met by completing MIC-approved courses in general repair. Also, all technicians with primary customer contact must have completed the Code of Conduct and Delivering Hassle-Free Boating-An Industry Responsibility courses.

Here is how you determine your required technical training hours.

In this example, technical (staff of two) would need to have a total of 60 hours of MIC-approved training. Since one technician is required to be MIC Certified in Technical, those training hours to become MIC Certified can also be used toward overall dealership required training hours.

When applying to become MIC Certified, it is possible that prior training (taken within the last 24 months) may count toward total required certification training hours. Courses must have been approved by the MIC Board.
